Free calculators work better than ebooks for B2B lead magnets
Enterprise buyers delete gated PDFs. They forward browser tools that answer a question with their own numbers. What we ship on Cloud Horizons, xEvolve, and Automate Certificates — and why.
The default B2B lead magnet is still a twenty-page ebook behind an email form. Security and platform teams do not read it. They run a calculator, screenshot the result, and paste it into Slack.
That is the whole insight behind the free tools on our product sites: NAT Gateway cost, MFT audit checklists, cert expiry risk, transit gateway math. No email gate on the calculation. The value is immediate and shareable inside the buying committee.
What makes a tool convert
Three properties matter more than design polish.
Editable assumptions. The buyer must recognize their own bill or stack in the inputs. Generic benchmarks feel like marketing.
A narrow question. One line item, one audit bucket, one renewal window. Calculators that try to model the entire cloud estate lie and get closed.
A honest next step. After the result, one link: trial, audit call, or integration doc. Not a popup before they see the math.
Where we put them
Cloud Horizons carries FinOps calculators because cost leaks are searchable problems. Automate Certificates carries renewal and sprawl tools because expiry incidents are the trigger event. xEvolve carries MFT audit and volume estimators because vendor questionnaires ask the same twelve questions every quarter.
Each tool is indexed on its own URL. That is programmatic SEO without a /resources graveyard.
What we do not do
We do not rip book chapters into PDFs. We do not gate the calculator behind HubSpot. We do not track keystrokes in the form — the math runs in the browser.
If you are building B2B SaaS, ship one tool that answers a question your last five sales calls repeated. Blog posts explain the mechanics; tools prove you already did the homework.
